Navisworks Manage 2010 System Requirements

Please ensure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements. If your system does not meet these requirements, problems can occur, both within Autodesk Navisworks and at the operating system level.

No matter whether your Windows operating system is the 32-bit or the 64-bit version, it is automatically detected during installation.

Note: Both the 32-bit version and 64-bit version of Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2010 can be installed on a 64-bit version of Windows, but the 64-bit version of Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2010 cannot be installed on a 32-bit version of Windows.

System Requirements for a Deployment

This section contains the system requirements for the location of the administrative image that you create, the network license server, and the client workstation.

Before you begin installing the program on a network, make sure that your servers and client workstations meet the minimum recommended hardware and software requirements for a deployment.

Whether the Windows operating system is the 32-bit or the 64-bit version is automatically detected when installing Autodesk Navisworks. You can choose which versions of Navisworks will be installed.

Note: Both the 32-bit version and 64-bit version of Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2010 can be installed on a 64-bit version of Windows, but the 64-bit version of Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2010 cannot be installed on a 32-bit version of Windows.

Autodesk Design Review 2010: "What Are My Options?"

With new versions of software come new options. Ah, but where did my options go? In Autodesk Design Review 2009, you would open the Options dialog box by choosing Tools > Options. In Autodesk Design Review 2010, click the Application Button > Options.

As you peruse the 2010 Options, there’s a lot that will look familiar, but there are some differences. We’ve provided some assistance to help you locate the new and different options.

Notice the new Color Scheme setting, Automatic Palette Launching, and File Notifications [formerly File Warnings] choices.

There were no changes made to the Sheet, Model, GPS, SteeringWheels, or ViewCube tabs.

If Autodesk® AutoCAD® 2010 is installed, the DWG Viewing tab is available in the Design Review 2010 Options dialog box. The DWG Viewing tab enables you to set the conversion options when opening a DWG file in Design Review 2010.

Lastly, the PDF Conversion tab in the Options dialog box provides settings to help you control DWF file size and quality and when you open a PDF.

Autodesk Productstream 2009 Support for Autodesk Design Review 2010

Autodesk Design Review 2010 is not compatible with Autodesk Productstream R2009 or Autodesk Vault R2009.

This update will enable product compatibility for you.

Installation Instructions:

1. Download the hotfix to a temporary directory on a workstation.
2. Extract the contents of the zip file to the temporary directory.
3. Double-click on TS1103527.msp to install the hotfix.
4. Repeat installation on all workstations.

Enabling 3GB switch on Windows XP or Windows Vista

Many of Autodesk's applications, including Navisworks, are able to take advantage of the 3GB functionality switch.

Advanced users may know that the virtual address space of processes and applications is still limited to 2 GB unless the /3GB switch is used in the Boot.ini file. When the physical RAM in the system exceeds 16 GB and the /3GB switch is used, the operating system will ignore the additional RAM until the /3GB switch is removed. This is because of the increased size of the kernel required to support more Page Table Entries.

Note: Only applications that use IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE in the process header can take advantage of this functionality.

Enable the 3GB switch on Windows XP

• Right-click My Computer. Click Properties.
• In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
• On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
• In the Startup and Recovery dialog box, under System startup, click Edit. The Windows boot.ini file will be opened in Microsoft® Notepad.
• Create a backup copy of the boot.ini file. Note: Boot.ini files may vary from computer to computer.
  Select the following line in the boot.ini file:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

• Press Ctrl+C to copy the line and then press Ctrl+V to paste it immediately below the original line.
  Note: Your text string may be different from the text string in this solution, so be sure to copy the text string from your boot.ini file, and not the text string included here.
  Modify the copied line to include “ /3GB”, as shown in the following example:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /3GB /fastdetect

Note: Do not overwrite any existing lines.

• Save and close the boot.ini file.
• Click OK to close each dialog box.
• Restart your computer.
• During startup, select the 3GB option. If you do not select the 3GB option, the system will default to the 2GB total memory setting.

Note: If problems occur during startup, you may need to update some of your drivers.

Enable the 3GB switch on Windows Vista

• Right-click Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.
• At the command prompt, enter "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072"
• Restart the computer.

Disable the 3GB switch on Windows Vista

• Right-click on Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.
• At the command prompt, enter "bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa"
• Restart the computer.

Sustainable Design and the Bottom Line

Autodesk tools aim to help designers conceptualize projects on a computer before starting the costly (and energy-intense) construction process.  

Correspondent Sumi Das talks to Autodesk’s director of sustainability, Lynelle Cameron, about how architects for the Cathedral of Christ the Light and the California Academy of Sciences used sustainable design in their structures. Cameron adds, while ‘green design’ isn’t the top priority for all companies, she says ‘sustainability’ can help the bottom line and will one day be part of everyday business practices.
